Berlin Ag Panel OKs $165 Garden Loam Funding

Agricultural Commission · Meeting of June 9, 2026

BERLIN — The Berlin Agricultural Commission voted to shift garden funds and heard a pitch for free farm dispute mediation. Treasurer and Clerk Laura Busky reported combined accounts of $9,108.89 and said the community garden has raised $1,475 in donations and fees this season. The commission voted unanimously to move money earmarked for a compost delivery toward garden startup costs, then voted to allocate $165 from the fiscal 2026 budget for a loam delivery from Balance Rock Farm to fill two new raised beds.

Guest mediator Bob, of MetroWest Mediation Services, told members the program is "free" and funded by a state grant covering farm disputes with neighbors, towns or the USDA. Busky also reported an April 10 letter from the state agriculture department notifying the commission of a spotted lanternfly detection "at Zero Pleasant Street," which she forwarded to the town administrator and Select Board.
