Conservation · Meeting of August 19, 2026
Berlin's Conservation Commission voted unanimously to recommend an applicant, identified only as Michael, to fill a vacant seat on the five-member board. Members also reported that trail clearing at the Clark Conservation Area, done by a contractor identified as Rob, is nearly finished and should reopen within weeks after drawing praise from neighbors. The commission faces a December 31 deadline to spend $60,000 in American Rescue Plan Act match funds tied to a MassTrails grant for the Mass Central Rail Trail's design phase, with VHB handling the 25 percent design work and the state's DCR possibly taking over afterward.
Member Adrian "AJ" Moses Jr. detailed removing large buckthorn and autumn olive plants at the Lyman property with help from SVT's Dan Stimson, saying "I'm not qualified. I don't have the credentials to use any kind of herbicides." A long-stalled forestry contract at the Ball Hill Road Conservation Area, in process for several years, may require a new forester after the current one failed to deliver an updated work order.
