Energy panel weighs fall grant application timing

Energy Committee · Meeting of July 14, 2026

BERLIN — The Berlin Energy Committee weighed delaying a $500,000 school decarbonization grant push to spring, citing leadership turnover. Chair Tim Wysocki and member Amy S. Grenier discussed holding off on a fall Green Communities application for the elementary school because the town administrator's office, the school finance director post and possibly the school committee are all changing hands. Consultants told the panel Berlin has about $300,000 left before hitting its $1 million Green Communities funding cap, after which a Climate Leader designation would cap individual grants at $125,000.

The committee instead leaned toward a library heating, cooling and lighting retrofit as its strongest fall candidate, though members flagged a roughly $130,000 VRF system quote as high and asked the project's auditor, Zach, for an explanation. "The good thing is, is we do have options of how we want to move forward," consultant Billy said. The fall Green Communities application deadline is October 9.
