Cemetery Commission · Meeting of September 15, 2026
BERLIN — The Berlin Cemetery Commission weighed a $2,800 surplus mower sale and moved to protect a historic boundary stone threatened by a sidewalk project. Chairman Barry Eager, Brenna Ewing and Robert H. Guild Jr. approved the prior meeting's minutes 2-0, with Guild abstaining since he'd missed that session. The commission's old mower, bought in 2004 and listed at $350 through a state surplus-bidding site, drew a bidding war that pushed the sale to $2,800, though Eager questioned whether proceeds should return to the cemetery's perpetual care fund.
Members also discussed a stone post marking the 1779 layout of the town common, which a planned sidewalk project may force to move; Eager said, "We can't have a bunch of workmen with a drawing just ripping the stone post out and going, oh, we didn't know." Ewing reported recruiting four to eight volunteers for stone cleaning with help from Council on Aging Director Melissa Sargent.
