Berlin Board Approves Septic Fixes For Gates Pond Road

Board of Health · Meeting of September 15, 2026

Berlin Board of Health approves four septic variances for a Gates Pond Road upgrade while pressing landlords over unresolved housing violations. Chair Paul Mikelk, with members Robert Wheeler and John Shoucair, voted 3-0 to approve the Gates Pond Road redesign, including a reduced property-line offset and a Presby system replacing a failed one-bedroom setup. The board's health agent, identified only as Bill, told members that "any violation that goes over 30 days... is considered potentially a condemnable offense," referencing stalled cases at 227 Pleasant Street and 136 Peach Hill Road, where owners have gone unresponsive for months.

Separately, the town's Capital Planning Committee approved $62,000 for landfill-closure engineering after a MassDEP letter demanded remediation of how Berlin's long-closed landfill is capped. Two more septic hearings, for Sawyer Hill Road and Randall Road, were postponed to October 20 after their legal notices were not properly advertised in the newspaper.
