Health Board Conditions Approval on Mixed-Use Plan
Board of Health · Meeting of August 4, 2026
Berlin Board of Health conditions septic sign-off on ZBA's August 12 zoning vote. Chair Paul D. Mikelk and member Robert Wheeler agreed to send the Zoning Board of Appeals a "qualified approval" for a proposed mixed-use conversion at Three Gates Pond Road, with the town's health agent noting the existing septic system's design flow of 1,970 gallons per day comfortably covers an estimated 860-gallon proposed use.
The board also continued housing code enforcement cases at 227 Pleasant Street and 136 Peach Hill Road, cleared three passing Title V inspections, and heard that a sinkhole opened beneath a resident's foot near the transfer station's compactors over the weekend, scratching her leg, days before bids are due on a long-delayed $25,000 fieldstone wall repair. "Saturday we had an experience, woman was, uh, by one of the compactors," the health agent told the board.
