Board selects $26,000 landfill wall repair bid
Board of Health · Meeting of August 18, 2026
Berlin Board of Health picks a $26,000 contractor to shotcrete an eroding landfill wall, over one member's doubts. Health agent Bill Brookings said low bidder Xtreme Concrete will spray concrete and anchor wire mesh over the stone retaining wall at the capped former landfill, drawing on $25,000 set aside years ago plus $1,000 from the revolving fund. Member John Shoucair questioned whether freeze-thaw cycling would eventually "break the concrete apart," comparing it to a cracking gunite pool; Chair Paul D.
Mikelk countered, "we'd get nothing done because we don't have the freaking money." The board also scheduled three septic variance hearings for September 15 and heard that a new food-scrap composting program is saving roughly $130 to $140 a ton versus trash hauling, at a cost of $12 per weekly totter.
