Board of Health OKs Transfer Station Wall Repair
Board of Health · Meeting of September 1, 2026
Berlin Board of Health advances transfer station wall repair, flags early concerns on a proposed River Road facility. Chair Paul D. Mikelk and member John Shoucair led Tuesday's Zoom meeting, approving a shotcrete contract set for September 9 to fix a sinkhole-damaged retaining wall, with the Highway Department clearing gravel beforehand.
The board's health agent reported stalled housing violations at 227 Pleasant Street and 136 Peach Hill Road, plus a septic failure at 244 South Street unresolved since a March 2025 letter from the elderly homeowner. Two Title V inspections, at 183 Randall Road and 147 Lancaster Road, both passed. Members also discussed a proposed mixed-use facility on River Road, informally called "the Hamlet Project," recommending nearby residents get baseline well-water testing.
"I would certainly imagine... they will have some fairly large-scale or open meetings," Mikelk said of the project's likely next steps. Shoucair, discussing transfer station volunteer training, said: "I've trained paramedics. I was a preceptor."
