Historical Commission · Meeting of October 2, 2026

Berlin's Historical Commission voted unanimously to advocate keeping the town's World War I-era flagpole instead of replacing it. Chair June Miller and Barry Eager, custodian of the town historical collection, said a full replacement would not qualify for Community Preservation Act funding, though a like-for-like restoration could. The commission also pushed back on a warrant article raising the demolition-delay bylaw from 50 to 100 years, with Eager favoring 75 years instead; Miller said she "didn't like finding things like that in the warrant without it being discussed with us first" and will raise the issue before the October 19 Special Town Meeting.

Separately, conservator Schaefer Arts estimated $1,450 to stabilize a child's early-1800s "skeleton suit," while Museum Textile Services is assessing an 1860s dress and an 1812 tailcoat at $400 per item, fronted personally by Eager and Miller pending reimbursement.
