Historical Commission · Meeting of September 18, 2026

BERLIN — The Berlin Historical Commission questioned who has legal authority to approve conservation work on two historic artifacts. Chair June Miller said she was unsure "we're authorized to sign this without having the town look at it," pointing to form language claiming "sole legal authority" that conflicts with joint Select Board and commission oversight of the collection. Custodian Barry Eager and Clerk Eleanor Bergen joined Miller in a page-by-page review of an 11-page restoration plan for the town's historic house museum, covering clapboard replacement, a needed state accessibility-ramp waiver, and insulation-before-HVAC sequencing.

The commission still planned to bring a child's skeleton suit and a man's dressing gown to Museum Textile Services in Andover, funded with Community Preservation Act money that Miller said "doesn't have a limitation" on timing. Members suggested insurance coverage of $1,000 to $2,000 per item pending conservation. Minutes from three August meetings were approved unanimously with amendments.
